Privacy Policy
Simple IR turns your phone into an infrared (IR) remote control, and into a Wi-Fi remote for supported karaoke players. This policy explains what information the app handles, why, and the choices you have. In short: your remotes live on your phone; we only store information on our servers when you choose to sign in and share or like remotes on Explore. We do not sell your data, we do not show third-party ads, and the app contains no advertising or analytics SDKs.
Information that stays on your phone
- Your remotes: buttons, IR signals and codes, layouts, names, colours, icons and settings.
- Pictures and GIFs you add to a remote: copied into the app's private storage. They are never uploaded, not even when you share a remote.
- Photos of a remote: when you build a remote from a photo, the photo is analysed on the phone (including text recognition) and is not uploaded.
- Signals copied with a USB IR receiver, your Quick Settings tile choices, and app preferences.
This information is not sent to us. It is removed when you uninstall the app or clear its data.
Karaoke remote (Wi-Fi)
The karaoke remote talks directly to the karaoke player (for example SongHub) on your own Wi-Fi or hotspot. The song number you type, the player's song list, the queue, the lyrics and the player's address stay between your phone and the player; they are not sent to us. Your favourite songs, the songs you sang with their scores, and your usual key per song are kept on your phone.
Guests' phones. When you let guests join, your phone serves a web page to phones on the same Wi-Fi. Guests open it from the QR code or link, which carries a code that stops working when you stop hosting. A name a guest types is shown beside their songs to everyone using the guest page, and is kept only in that guest's browser and in your phone's memory while hosting; nothing about guests is sent to us.
Floating bubble and lyrics. The bubble and its lyrics are drawn by the app on your phone. The floating lyrics on a guest's phone are drawn by that phone's browser. Neither is recorded or uploaded.
Information we store when you use Explore
Browsing and using shared remotes does not need an account. To share, like or report remotes you sign in with your Google account. We then process:
| Data | Why | Who can see it |
|---|---|---|
| Your name, email address and account ID from Google Sign-In | To create your account and keep you signed in | Only you and us. Your email is never shown to others. |
| The name shown on your remotes (the first name on your Google account unless you change it) | To show who shared a remote | Everyone using Explore |
| Remotes you choose to share: name, description, category, button labels, layout and IR codes | To publish them on Explore | Everyone using Explore |
| Your likes and the remotes you used (download count) | To count likes and downloads once per person | Only you and us (others see the totals) |
| Reports you send about a shared remote | To review and remove content that breaks the rules | Only us |
This information is stored with Google Firebase (Firebase Authentication and Realtime Database), which acts as our service provider. It is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS).
App integrity checks
To protect the shared remotes from abuse, the app uses Firebase App Check with Google Play Integrity, which confirms that requests come from the genuine Simple IR app. Google processes device and app integrity signals for this check under Google's Privacy Policy. We do not receive identifiers that track you across apps.
Shopping link
Where your phone has no IR blaster, the app may show a recommended USB IR blaster with an affiliate link (marked "Affiliate link"). Tapping it opens the shop's page in your browser; the shop's own privacy policy applies there, and we may earn a commission. The app does not send any information about you with that link.
Permissions
- Transmit infrared: to send signals through the phone's IR blaster.
- USB: to use a plug-in IR blaster or receiver, only when you connect one.
- Internet, network and Wi-Fi state: for Explore, sign-in and the recommended-blaster details, and to find and talk to a karaoke player on your Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi multicast is used only to discover the player).
- Display over other apps: only when you turn on the floating karaoke bubble.
- Foreground service, notifications and keeping the phone awake: to keep the karaoke bubble and guest hosting running, with a notification showing while they do.
- Battery optimization: the app may ask you to let it run in the background, so guests are not cut off. You can say no.
- Vibration: for button and gesture feedback.
- Photos and camera: through Android's photo picker and camera app, only when you choose a picture or take a photo. The app does not request broad storage or camera permissions.
Sharing with others
We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not share it with third parties except our service providers named above (Google Firebase and Google Play services), or when required by law.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your account information and shared remotes until you delete them. You can:
- Remove a shared remote: open it on Explore and choose Remove from Explore.
- Delete your account and everything you shared: Explore ▸ your account picture ▸ Delete account. This deletes your account, your shared remotes, your likes, download records and reports right away.
- Ask us to delete it by email, if you no longer have the app: see Delete your account. We complete email requests within 30 days.
Remotes stored only on your phone are deleted when you uninstall the app or clear its storage.
